Watch the History and Geography of Religion

A cool animation:

“How has the geography of religion evolved over the centuries, and where has it sparked wars? Our map gives us a brief history of the world’s most well-known religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. Selected periods of inter-religious bloodshed are also highlighted. Want to see 5,000 years of religion in 90 seconds? Ready, Set, Go!” (under the fold):

  1. Very cool. Thanks for posting.

  2. Just to be pedantic: Buddhism is the only religion which cannot claim a war to its name… that being said… apparently Tibet wasn’t a very nice place to be when it was being run by the monks… if you weren’t of the priest cast that is 😛

  3. Panopticon, the Tamils in Sri Lanka will be very surprised to learn that Buddhism has never inspired a war.

I guess the Carvaka atheist/materialist movement in India, which dates back to 600 BCE, is too small to be included.

  5. Mustafa Mond, FCD

Their timeline does not go back as far as 70000 BCE, and so is unfair to the cult of the python.

  6. Following up on Mustafa M’s first comment, here is a nice, brief write up on the Carvakas. Their war I guess, would have been with the Brahmins.

  7. Alon – i hardly think the Sri Lankan civil war is waged on the grounds of religion (shock horror!)
While yes, while Sri Lanka is predominantly Buddhist, the tigers aren’t exactly in the moral high ground in this conflict, which they started…
anyway, read my wording carefully… “cannot claim a war to its name”. The civil war is about the tamils wanting their own territories, and the government trying to stop them achieving this goal…. its not a war of religious ideologies.
