….my father would have turned 86.
I’ll have a shot of slivovitz in his honor tonight.

  1. It’s a day of remembering the dearly departed. The fellow posting the photos of his dad’s spider bite (as seen at boing boing) is doing so to mark the one-year anniversary of his dad’s death.

Maybe you might have some stories about your father to tell–head over to Ronni Bennett’s
I’ll be thinking of you and your father at dinner tonight.

  2. My condolences.

  3. Warmest condolences, as well, but I hope that you have many recollections that keep his memory alive. I am certain that he would be proud of you.

  4. Condolences.
I had a Czech colleague who always proclaimed the wonders of slivovitz, but I never tried it. If I can find some, I will toast your father and mine, who will turn 86 on Saturday. He is still here, but just barely, as a series of minor strokes has robbed him of his short term memory and much of his long-term memory, also.
Normally, this would be very tragic, but he apparently remembers me as a high school student from 40 years(and 40 pounds) ago. I see him 2 or 3 time a year, and he always says in a loud voice, “Say, Tex, haven’t you put on a lot of weigh?” This would be OK, except that since his short term memory is gone, he forgets that he has said it and repeats this comment every 10 minutes. The rest of my family thinks it is hilarious.
My father was one of the good guys and a founding member of the Greatest Generation. He survived the sinking of two aircraft carriers in the Pacific in WWII. And at 86 he is still fighting like hell.
Lots of Czech influence here in the middle of Texas (go figure), so I like my chances of finding slivovitz.
