All of these social networks are quite interesting. I was part of the Six Degrees network back in the days (mid-nineties I think), but never really took to it.
Now, I have a MySpace, a facebook, and a LinkedIn profile (and a WAYN and Hi5 profile, but those two are not used).
I use the profiles in the different places quite differently – in MySpace I accept all friend requests, while I want some kind of connection in facebook (knowing people through the web is fine).
LinkedIn is reserved for professional use; to keep in touch with people I’ve worked or studied with. Unsurprisingly my LinkedIn profile is the only one that gets me job offers.
There is a relevant piece in the Washington Post: Friend? Not? It’s One or the Other
I met my wife on Six Degrees by accident. We’ve been married over 6 years with 2 beautiful children!
Now I only blog and maintain a homepage, mostly to display my CV and make me look really cool to potential employers as I finish my PhD.
